JR West have revealed design details of the new #273 series trains that will run on the limited express Yakumo service from spring 2024. The limited express Yakumo links the Sanyo and San’in regions of western Japan, running from Okayama Station in Okayama Prefecture to Yonago Station in Tottori Prefecture and Matsue Station and Izumoshi Station in Shimane Prefecture. The new #273 trains will replace the #381 series trains that have been operating on this route since 1982.

The train’s exterior will be painted bronze with a traditional cloud motif on the front and sides. The train’s color has been called “Yakumo Bronze” and is meant to represent a mixture of warm colors that can be seen in the Sanin region, such as sunset on the sea, ceremonial fires, and red-tiled rooftops.

The warm colors continue in the first class green cars which will have yellow seating in rows of three in a 1 + 2 pattern. Seating in the ordinary cars will be in rows of four in a 2 + 2 pattern, and the seats will be colored green to reflect the green mountains along the train’s route.

One car will also have seats that face each other with tables in between and side partitions to create a sense of privacy.

As the Yakumo passes through mountainous scenery with many curves, the #273 series will have a special tilting mechanism to ensure a smoother ride. For passenger’s convenience the car will also have free onboard Wi-Fi internet access, power outlets for all seats, and space for large luggage. The four-car train will also have expanded space for wheelchairs, as well as security cameras and air purifiers.

The new train’s interior and exterior were designed by Yasuyuki Kawanishi who also designed the award-winning Setsugekka sightseeing train that runs in Niigata Prefecture.
