A consortium of Tokyu Corporation, JR East, and Tokyo Metro have begun construction on the next major phase in the ongoing redevelopment of the Shibuya Station area.

In 2019, the first phase of the Shibuya Scramble Square commercial complex was completed with the opening of the East Tower, a skyscraper directly connected to Shibuya Station. Now this project has entered its second phase and construction has begun on the Central Tower and West Tower. These new skyscrapers, which are due to be completed by 2031, will create one of the largest commercial facilities in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

The redevelopment plan also includes a multi-layered pedestrian network that will connect Shibuya Station with the north, south, east and west sides of Shibuya at both ground and upper levels. This pedestrian network is due to be completed in 2030. This will include a corridor directly above the Ginza Line called the “4th Floor East Exit Skyway” that will connect the station to the Central Tower of Shibuya Scramble Square.

Redevelopment has been ongoing at JR Shibuya Station for a number of years with facilities relocated repeatedly during this time. However, new ticket gates and concourses are now almost completed and there will also soon be a large passageway connecting the east and west sides of the station.

The entire redevelopment is now scheduled for completion in 2034.
