Called the “Kyotram” the new tram cars are intended to replace older models but will retain the Randen Tram Line’s old fashioned style. Designed by GK Design Soken Hiroshima, the new tram cars will have curved surfaces front and back that are typical of old fashioned streetcars, and large windows to ensure the interior is bright and comfortable. The exteriors will be painted with Randen’s standard purple color.

The new trams will also have energy-saving regenerative braking devices installed and on-board air purifiers.
The first “Kyotram” will be introduced in 2024 and a total of seven new tram cars will be introduced by 2028. This will be the first time in 24 years that Keifuku has introduced a new model of tram car to the line.

The current Randen tram is a familiar sight in Kyoto
The Randen Tram Line connects central Kyoto with the western Arashiyama and northern Kitano areas via scenic routes that are popular with visiting tourists. Local people are also fond of the Randen Tram Line as it is the last remaining part of a network of tramlines that once connected the whole city.
