A new train named “Kizashi” will begin running on the JR Sanyo Main Line in Yamaguchi Prefecture this summer. This is the first new train to be introduced to the Yamaguchi section of the JR Sanyo Main Line in 45 years.
JR West’s new Kizashi train
The Kizashi is a #227 series electric train similar to those already operating in the Hiroshima and Okayama areas. The new train’s exterior design is inspired by Yamaguchi Prefecture’s role in the 19th century period of the Meiji Restoration. Yamaguchi Prefecture was home to many key leaders of this revolutionary period that transformed Japan from an isolated feudal country into a modern nation state. The Kizashi’s exterior features black and gold stripes, which symbolize rays of sunshine streaming in dawn’s early light. The name “Kizashi” also means “sign” or “portent” and JR West hopes that the new train’s introduction will be a harbinger of positive transformation for the Yamaguchi area.
The new train’s layout
In anticipation of heavy usage during commuter and school rush hours, the number of seats inside the cars has been reduced to secure more space around the doors. This will also make it easier for tourists to store large suitcases. The cars are equipped with barrier-free toilets, security cameras, and safety features that include a function that will automatically stop the train should the driver fall suddenly ill.
The new train’s interior
A total of 24 train cars will be introduced to the Yamaguchi section of the Sanyo Main Line, which runs between Iwakuni Station and Shimonoseki Station. The train sets will consist of three two-car trains and six three-car trains.
The #227 lineup: Red Wing, Urara and Kizashi
Other trains in the #227 series include the “Red Wing” trains that were introduced to the Hiroshima area in 2015 and the “Urara” trains that have been running in the Okayama area since 2023.
