NYK Line (also known as Nippon Yusen) has released details of its new cruise ship, Amane, which will have its debut cruise on Tokyo Bay in 2027. The new ship is a successor to the Lady Crystal, an iconic restaurant ship that has cruised the bay for 36 years but which is scheduled for retirement in November 2026.

Amane, whose name means the “sound of the sea,” is designed to carry NYK’s long-standing passenger ship culture into a new era. Measuring approximately 48 meters in length with a gross tonnage of 480 tons, the ship has a capacity for around 90 passengers.

Technologically, Amane represents a major step forward as it is Japan’s first cruise ship to use hydrogen as fuel. Amane has a hybrid electric propulsion system that integrates batteries with traditional engines. This arrangement not only supports NYK’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, but will also enhance passenger comfort by drastically reducing noise, vibrations, and fuel odors. NYK President Takaya Soga has characterized the ship as a showcase for the potential of decarbonization within the maritime industry.
World-renowned designers and consultants have also collaborated with Nippon Yusen on the Amane project.
The 1st floor main dining room
The interior designer Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall Inc. oversaw the total design, which is centered on the concept of “Tokyo Bay as a garden” with the ship’s interior designed to resemble a floating villa.
The 2nd floor bar lounge
Hospitality expert Shinpei Terada, CEO of Tysons & Company, created the service model which he describes as “boutique cruise.” Passengers will experience attentive hospitality from their first arrival at the land lounge and throughout their onboard experience, and guests in private cabins will be treated to a butler service.

Passengers will also enjoy French course meals prepared by Kenji Hayama, the current head chef of the Lady Crystal, and these meals will showcase the seasonal specialties of various regions in Japan.
The Amane: a new symbol of Tokyo Bay
NYK hopes that Amane will become a new symbol of Tokyo Bay, blending the company’s 140-year heritage with a forward-looking vision of sustainable maritime travel. The ship is due to make its debut cruise sometime around May 2027.
